Who I am

Carlo Gori

I began to knapp flint and obsidian in 2002, but I have had former experiences in prehistoric tools and materials when, many years ago, I was a young researcher for the Natural History Museum in my native town. I haft the blades with Roe Buck and Deer antler points, natural sinew and glue.
Some times I also use epoxy to fix better the handles and use the Pine pitch to complete the assemblage. At the beginning of 2004 I began to work LAP (lapidary) Knapping with slabs bought in USA from knappers and from them I have had so many hints to get my current skill that you may see, even if I broken a lot of slabs before to get my first blade finished!!!!

In 2004 I became a Member of K.R.U. (Knappers-R-Us), in the meantime I have found a new friend, Frank who is a very serious and professional obsidian seller, I usually buy obsidian from him and I realised with one of his obsidian’s slab my best work; a mahogany obsidian 15” Spear Point.

As far as my ABO/PALEO works (old knapping style) I generally work with hard and soft percussion in FLINT pebbles from anywhere in Italy, then I go to choose a right handle in the true prehistoric style. Obviously the ABO blades are smaller and thicker than the other in obsidian, but they appears like true prehistoric point.

When I began to knapp in LAP I used any type of Obsidian, but now I started to work also NOVACULITE, KEOKUK, GEORGETOWN, PEDERNALES and DACITE. I build in any size and I assemble these blades in Native Indians style and in a Modern style with hantlers, wood, stone and semi precious stones like true Lapislazuli, Malachite and other stuff; at the end of work and where it's necessary, I tie the blades with artificial sinew and Pine pitch. Only three years are passed since I start to knapp and I am proud of my work, so much to have had my greatest satisfaction when a friend, knapper in States, I sent some pictures of my works said me:

OTZI WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD TO HAVE ONE OF THESE!
